Hidden doors throughout a Palm Jumeirah villa

A complete set of hidden doors for a private residence on Palm Jumeirah: the old doors and frames stripped out, concealed frames built into the walls and plastered flush, and white flush leaves with black levers and pulls hung so the corridors read as unbroken walls.

The brief

The owners were refurbishing the whole villa and wanted the corridors and landings to read as clean white planes, with the bedroom, bathroom and storage doors disappearing into the walls.

What we made

Every opening was stripped back to the block, the old frames removed and the openings trued. Concealed aluminium frames were fixed into the openings and plastered flush on both sides, then the white flush leaves were hung on concealed adjustable hinges with a shadow gap around them. Single doors carry a black lever on a round rose; the pair of storage doors carries black pulls. The doors were finished in the wall colour so the only line left is the shadow gap.

Why it works

Hidden doors live or die on the frame and the plastering, so the sequence mattered: frames in before the plasterer, leaves in after the painter. The before and during photographs show the openings as found, the frames in the wall, and the finished result.
