Veneer versus solid wood doors in Dubai heat
In Dubai, a veneer press on an engineered core is the more stable build for most doors, because solid boards move with the swing between outdoor heat and indoor air conditioning. Fully solid timber earns its place on an exposed main door in teak, where its density and oils resist weather, and on traditional panelled doors. Both are real wood on the face. The difference is in the core, the stability and the price.

Two ways to build a wooden door
A solid timber door is built from boards of one species, glued and laminated into stiles, rails and panels, so the timber runs all the way through. A veneer press door is an engineered core, a stable laminated or composite core, with a real wood veneer pressed onto both faces and hardwood lippings on the edges, then lacquered. From the outside both are wood. Inside, one is a single material and the other is a composite designed not to move.
What Dubai does to a door
An entrance door in Dubai lives between forty degree air and strong sun on one face and twenty two degree air conditioning on the other, with humidity that swings from dry in winter to saturated in summer. Timber takes on and gives off moisture with the air, and as it does it swells and shrinks across the grain. A solid board with a hot dry face and a cool face wants to cup, and a wide solid panel wants to split at the joints. An engineered core does not care which face is hot, because it is built from layers that pull against each other, so a veneered door stays flat across the seasons. This is the single most important reason we build most doors as a veneer press.
| Veneer press | Solid timber | |
|---|---|---|
| Stability in heat and AC | Best; engineered core stays flat | Species dependent; teak is excellent, others move |
| Grain | Matched across the leaf and across a set | Natural, varies board to board |
| Weight | Lighter for the size | Heavy, especially in teak |
| Size | Full height and oversized leaves | Limited by board width and weight |
| Carving and mouldings | Applied mouldings, grooves | Carved and raised panels in the timber |
| Repair | Re lacquer; deep damage needs a new face | Sand and re finish, repairable many times |
| Cost | Mid, by species | High, especially teak |
| Best for | Interior doors, pivot and oversized doors, covered entrances | Exposed main doors in teak, traditional panelled doors |
Where solid timber wins
On an exposed main door, in teak. Teak is dense, oily and resistant to moisture, insects and movement, which is why it has been the entrance door timber of the Gulf for generations, and a solid teak door that is properly laminated and finished will outlast the house. On a traditional panelled door with raised and fielded panels, where the panel is carved from the timber and the mouldings are part of it. And where a door will be sanded and refinished many times over its life, because solid timber can take it.
Where veneer press wins
On almost every interior door, where stability, a matched grain and a lighter leaf matter more than depth of timber. On pivot and oversized doors, which need a stiff flat leaf at a size solid boards cannot reach. On covered and recessed entrances, where a walnut or oak veneer gives the look without the risk. And wherever a set of doors must read as one timber, because veneer is matched across the leaf and across the set in a way solid boards never are.
The hybrid: solid core with a thick veneer
Most of the main doors we make are the middle path: a solid engineered core with a thick teak or walnut veneer press and wide solid lippings, so the door has the stability of the engineered build, the weight and feel of a solid door and the durability of a thick face that can be sanded and re lacquered. For an exposed entrance we specify teak on the face; for a sheltered one, walnut or oak.
Cost
Interior doors start from AED 3,800 for the door and frame, and the veneer species moves the price within the usual AED 3,800 to 8,000 range. Main doors start from around AED 13,000 for the door, with fully solid teak at the upper end. Installation, removal and hardware are itemised separately.

Questions
Frequently asked
Is a solid wood door better than a veneer door?
Not in Dubai, for most doors. A veneer press on an engineered core stays flat between outdoor heat and indoor air conditioning, where solid boards can cup and split. Solid timber earns its place on an exposed main door in teak and on traditional carved panelled doors.
Do veneer doors look cheap?
No. A veneer press uses real wood on the face, matched across the leaf and across a set, which is a look solid boards cannot give. The cheap doors people think of are thin paper or foil laminates, not real veneer.
Will a solid wood door warp in Dubai?
It can, depending on the species and the exposure. Teak resists it well; oak, walnut and softer timbers move more. An engineered core with a veneer press does not warp, which is why we build most doors that way.
Which is more expensive, veneer or solid wood?
Solid timber, especially teak. Interior veneered doors start from AED 3,800 for the door and frame; main doors start from around AED 13,000, with fully solid teak at the upper end.
