Main door design ideas for Dubai homes

The best main door design starts from the house, not a catalogue. Match the proportion of the door to the facade, choose a stable timber build for the Dubai climate, decide single, double or pivot from the width of the opening, and let one detail lead, whether that is the grain, the pull or the glass. Main doors from The Door Guild start from around AED 13,000 for the door, with removal, installation and hardware itemised separately.

Carved Wooden Main Door With Radial Pattern

Start with the opening, not the picture

Every main door design decision follows from three measurements: the width and height of the structural opening, the depth of the porch or reveal, and the distance from the door to the street. A wide opening of 1.8 m or more can carry a pair of doors or a single oversized leaf. A tall opening of 2.7 m or more suits a pivot door or a door with a fanlight. A deep porch keeps the sun and rain off the door and widens the choice of timber and finish; a flush facade with no shelter narrows it to teak and the most durable systems. Measure first, then look at pictures.

Single, double or pivot

A single leaf is the most practical door: it seals well, it is the easiest to secure, and it suits openings up to about 1.2 m wide. A double door, two equal leaves or a leaf and a half, suits wide formal entrances and the villas of the older Emaar and Nakheel communities, where the original door is often a pair. A pivot door hangs on a floor pivot rather than hinges, so it can be far larger than either, up to the full height of a double storey entrance, and it swings with a balanced motion that makes a heavy leaf feel light. Pivot doors need a floor detail planned before the floor finish goes down and a wider threshold, so they are a renovation or new build choice rather than a swap.

Choose one leading detail

Grain, grooves, glass, pull and surround all compete for attention, and a door that tries to use all of them looks busy from the street. The strongest doors let one lead. A bookmatched walnut face with nothing on it but a long brass pull. A painted panelled door with a fanlight above and nothing else. A reeded sidelight beside a plain leaf. Decide which detail the door is about, and keep the rest quiet.

Panelled, flush, grooved or carved

Panelled doors suit the traditional villa communities and read as classic; they are made with applied or raised panels and can be painted or veneered. Flush doors in a bookmatched veneer suit contemporary houses and let the timber do the work. Grooved doors, with horizontal or vertical lines routed into a flush face, sit between the two and are the most popular design in Dubai at the moment. Carved and geometric doors, with a routed pattern or a two tone inlay, are for houses with an Arabic or Art Deco character and are drawn individually.

Glass: sidelights, fanlights and vision panels

Glass brings daylight into the hall and lets you see who is at the door. A sidelight is a fixed glazed panel beside the leaf; a fanlight sits above it; a vision panel is glass in the leaf itself. Reeded or fluted glass gives light without a clear view in. All glass on a main door is laminated safety glass, and the frame around it is made with the door so the glazing bars and the leaf line through.

Timber that suits Dubai

Heat outside and air conditioning inside make solid boards move, so the door build matters more than the species on the face. We make main doors as a solid core with a thick veneer press, which gives the look of any species with the stability of an engineered core, or as fully solid timber in teak for an exposed entrance. Teak is the exterior timber of the Gulf for good reason: dense, oily and resistant to moisture and movement. Walnut and oak suit covered and recessed entrances. Our wood types guide goes through each species.

Finishes that last

An exterior door is finished in a UV stable lacquer over a veneer or a PU paint system, in matt, satin or gloss. Dark colours absorb more heat and show dust; a mid tone timber or a painted off white is the easiest to keep looking new on a west facing door. Black and charcoal doors are popular and look superb in a shaded porch, and we tell you when a porch is too exposed for them.

Hardware and smart locks

Decide the pull, the lock and any smart lock at the drawing stage, because the leaf is prepared for them in production. A long pull bar is the signature of a contemporary door; a lever on a rose or a ring pull suits a panelled door. Smart locks with fingerprint, keypad, card and app access are fitted and paired at installation, and the leaf is cut for the specific model. Our hardware pages show the brands we fit.

The surround

A stone or clad surround turns the door into part of the facade. A clean plastered reveal suits minimal houses. A painted timber frame with a fanlight suits the classic communities. Whichever it is, the surround should be drawn with the door, not added after.

What a main door costs

Main doors start from around AED 13,000 for the door itself, and the final figure depends on size, build, species, finish, glass and hardware. Removal of the old door, installation and the hardware are itemised separately on the quote. Every door is quoted as a complete installed set after the site measure. In managed communities such as Emaar and Damac a new design needs a no objection certificate first, while repolishing or a colour change in the same style does not; our community approval guide explains it.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best main door design for a Dubai villa?

A design drawn to the opening and the facade. For a contemporary villa, a flush or grooved walnut or teak leaf with a long pull, or a pivot door for a tall entrance. For a classic villa, a panelled single or double door, painted or veneered, with a fanlight or sidelight.

Should a main door be single or double?

Single up to about 1.2 m wide, because it seals and secures best. Double for openings of 1.6 m and more, or where the house is symmetrical and formal. A pivot door covers tall or wide openings as a single leaf.

What colour main door is best in Dubai heat?

Mid tone timber and off white painted doors stay coolest and show least dust. Black and charcoal doors look superb but should sit in a shaded porch, and we say so when an entrance is too exposed for them.

How much does a main door cost in Dubai?

From around AED 13,000 for the door, with removal, installation and hardware itemised separately. Size, build, species, finish, glass and hardware move the figure. We quote a complete installed set after the site measure.
