Folding doors

A folding door is made of hinged panels that fold against each other and stack to one side, opening a wide space almost completely. We make bespoke wooden folding and bifold doors for Dubai homes, for room dividers, wardrobes, laundry and storage openings, in timber, veneer or lacquer.

Folding doors indoors

Indoors, folding doors divide open plan spaces, close off a study or utility, or front a wide storage wall. Each panel runs on a top track with pivots and guides, and the stack can sit at one side or split to both. For external aluminium and glass bifolds, speak to Fix It Mates.

How an interior folding door works

The door is made of two or more panels hinged together in pairs. The first panel of each pair is fixed to a pivot at the side of the opening or to a carriage in a top track, and as the door opens the panels fold against each other and stack to one side, leaving almost the whole opening clear. There is no bottom track in an interior system; a guide pin at the foot of the leading panel keeps the stack in line. Two panels make a simple bifold, four or six make a room divider, and the stack can sit at one side or split to both.

Where folding doors earn their place indoors

Across a wide opening between two living spaces that is open most of the time but needs closing for a film, a guest or a quiet evening. In front of a storage wall or a wardrobe run, where hinged doors would swing into the room and a sliding door would only ever open half the width. Across a laundry or utility alcove off a kitchen. Between a study and a hallway, where glazed panels keep the light moving through the house.

Panel design

The panels are drawn as one composition so that grooves, panel mouldings or glazing bars line through across the whole run when the door is closed. Panels can be flush, grooved, panelled or glazed with clear or reeded glass in a timber frame. Each panel is narrower than a standard door leaf, so the leaf edge, the hinge spacing and the handle position are drawn with care to keep the stack tidy when open.

Hardware and operation

The top track, carriages, pivots and hinges are a system matched to the panel weight. Interior folding hardware runs quietly and the panels can be held closed with flush bolts and a lever or pull on the leading panel. A folding door does not seal against sound like a hinged door in a frame, so it suits dividing and storage openings rather than a bedroom door onto a corridor.

Finishes

Veneer press, PU paint or laminate, with the track and hardware in black, brass or stainless to match the handles elsewhere in the house. For external aluminium and glass bifolds onto a garden or terrace, speak to Fix It Mates.

How we work

From site measure to installation

Four steps, one point of contact, and nothing made until you approve the drawings.

  1. Site measure

We visit, measure the opening, check the wall build up and floor level, and talk through how the door should look and work.

  2. Drawings and samples

You receive shop drawings and physical finish samples. Nothing goes into production until you or your designer approve them.

  3. Made to order

Your door is factory produced to the approved drawings, with production updates as it moves through the build and a quality check before it leaves.

  4. Installed by our team

Our fitting team installs, adjusts and hands over the door, with one point of contact from the first visit to the last adjustment.

Questions

Frequently asked

Are folding doors the same as bifold doors?

Yes, bifold is the common name for a folding door with panels hinged in pairs. We make interior timber versions in any number of panels.

How long does a bespoke door take?

Lead time depends on the size, finish, hardware and how quickly drawings are approved. We confirm the programme in writing when you approve the drawings, and keep you updated during production.

How many panels can an interior folding door have?

Two to six is the usual range. The panels are drawn as one composition so grooves or glazing bars line through when closed, and the stack can sit at one side or split to both.

Are interior folding doors soundproof?

No. They divide and close a space well but do not seal like a hinged door in a frame. For a bedroom onto a corridor, a hinged or pocket door is the better choice.
